Hope Leads to Deeper Waters
A poem reflecting on Luke 5:11
A poem Travis wrote on following Jesus into places of discomfort and uncertainty. “Hope sees beyond things.” He writes in his book Shiny Eyes.
Vulnerability is a difficult place, but without it we will not be led. We will not really live.
Letting myself be
Led to the deep waters
The waters that bid no return
To the illusory sandbars of false and eroding security
I must row much farther out
No matter how much fog and crashing waves encircle my boat
For it is here that the Answer awaits me
Jesus (The Mystery) commands these seas
Sometimes to stay calm, sometimes to rage and calm me
It is here I must cast out my net
Not to catch all the answers but to catch the light yoke
I want to live a new sea fairing adventure
Rich in discoveries within the journey
To an unknown destination that awaits
I want to breathe the salty air deep into my lungs
And feel the wet waves crashing over the bow
His living water running down my face

When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God's love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
