Thanksgiving as Remembering
“God will not ignore our grief over old memories of pain. He rewrites them with new memories of hope.” - Christina Varvel
Thanksgiving is a time for remembrance, an act of turning back to those moments when God showed up in our lives, moments where we can confidently say, 'That was God.' It's a time to reflect on who God truly is and how He has revealed Himself to us, both through Scripture and personal experiences.
As we contemplate thanksgiving, we are invited to connect with the truth of who God is. Our past encounters with Him beckon us into a present moment with Him. Just as the Israelites used physical stones, called Ebenezer stones, to remember God's faithfulness and to pray for Him to act again, we too can use our memories as a generational prayer for God to continue working in our lives.
So, I invite you to prayerfully consider and wonder with God: What are the areas where you have seen God's help? In what ways have you witnessed His work in your story? Take a moment to reflect on those specific moments and notice what stands out about God's character and heart towards you during those times.
Did you experience His love in a profound way? Did you sense His presence guiding you through a difficult season? Perhaps you encountered His healing touch, His forgiveness, His peace, or the presence of His Spirit. Whatever it may be, take time to acknowledge and appreciate those encounters.
Remember, God doesn't change. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. So, what would it be like to come to Him afresh today, knowing that He is the same God who has shown Himself faithful in the past? How can you approach Him with a renewed sense of awe, wonder, and expectation?
However, if trying to remember God-moments only highlights the contrast of struggle, grief, or pain in this current season of life, I encourage you to seek support and guidance. Reach out to trusted friends, mentors, or spiritual leaders who can provide comfort, encouragement, and a listening ear. We are designed to be alone.
Remember, Thanksgiving is not just about giving thanks for the good times, but also about acknowledging God's presence and faithfulness even in the midst of challenges. May this season of remembrance deepen your relationship with God and fill your heart with gratitude and hope. 🙏🌟 #Thanksgiving #RememberingGodMoments"
